From remarkable architecture to a wonderful place to live
An open-concept kitchen next to the patio, a workspace built into a wall of cabinets, or a cozy reading nook. The Vold’s interior designs show what life here will be like. “Ontwerpplek” explains the vision and thoughtful choices behind the floor plans and interior renderings.
How did you get involved with The Vold?
"Dura Vermeer asked us to optimize and refine the floor plans for The Vold and bring them to life in the various interior renderings. What will it be like to live here? What possibilities do the different homes offer? And how can we reflect the building’s distinctive character inside as well?
We also wanted to show how the homes cater to different lifestyles. A couple who works from home a lot has different needs than someone who enjoys cooking elaborate meals and entertaining friends. One person might be looking for a large, open living space, while another might want a place to retreat to for a moment of peace."
What makes a layout work well for you?
"From the resident’s perspective. Where do you drink your coffee in the morning? Where do you plop down when you get home? Do you work from home a lot, do you enjoy cooking, or do you often have friends over? Although we don’t know the future residents yet, for each home we’ve imagined who might live there and what that person needs.
With that in mind, we explored various layouts. The key is for a home to feel comfortable and function well in everyday life. Think of an open kitchen next to the patio, a workspace that blends into a wall of cabinets, or a custom closet that provides storage in a studio apartment while also separating the sleeping and living areas."
Which of The Vold's strengths did you draw on in that regard?
"The outdoor spaces, the large windows, and the abundance of natural light. The terraces are incorporated into the architecture in a partially stepped pattern. Together with the greenery in and around the building, this brings the outdoors close by in many places.
We’ve incorporated this into the floor plans. Where possible, the kitchen-dining area or sitting area is located along the facade, close to the outdoor space. This allows you to make the most of the daylight and your connection to the outdoors.
Further inside the home, there’s space for a sense of security: a sheltered reading nook, a quiet bedroom, or a corner where you can retreat for a moment. That contrast works well here. You live right in the heart of Amsterdam and come home to a place where you can unwind."
How is the architecture reflected in the interiors?
"The Vold has a distinct character. The wooden structure gives the building a rugged quality, while the architecture also exudes elegance. We sought to capture that combination inside.
We opt for a calm foundation, with elements that give a space personality—a striking piece of furniture, a unique material, art on the wall, or a beautiful lamp. Materials should be tactile. It’s precisely by combining different textures and making a few bold choices that an interior gains character."
What advise would you like to give to future residents?
"Look beyond the initial layout you see on a floor plan. A different spot for the dining table, a smart built-in cabinet system, or a different arrangement of the seating area can make a big difference in how you experience and use a home.
And don’t be afraid to make your own choices. Our designs show what’s possible and how we envision the homes at The Vold, but ultimately, it’s the resident who can truly make it their own home.”
